COMING SOON...SPORTS PAGE I'm not really that interested in sports. I am interested, however, in the idea of writing about sports, and more specifically, in the idea of the sports writer himself. What an unlikely character: someone who lives for football, baseball, hockey, cheese wiz, hot dogs, AND...writing; a person who would never be expected to have any artistic or intellectual values but finds some ground for such values in the enthusiasm he has for popular games. The mere idea of making art "about" sports, period, is enough to get grab your attention. In any case, for my purposes, what interests me is the realtionship between sports and fan-artist.
I am interested primarily in this relationship, because, as i mentioned above, I'm not very interested in sports. In fact, there's a sense in which writing about sports makes me as unlikely a character as the sports writer himself. I teach philosophy at a local university; I'm very much invovled in music; I perform stand-up comedy weekly; and i also don't really care about sports. Thusly, I hope to write at least one sports related piece per month. We'll see if that happens. I think the first SPORTS PAGE article may be on the bull jumping games of the Minoan civilization, the civilization that inhabited the isle of crete long ago. Their most noteworthy visual art concerns sports: representations of the bull jumping games. It's like the ancient art of the rodeo clown. Accordingly, the article may have something to do with the history of the rodeo clown. Who knows.
